Micro Derm Abrasion: The Logical Choice?

We are all born with perfect skin, but through eating habits, cleaning habits, and sometimes genetics, we end up with less than perfect skin. Micro derm abrasion (also known as microdermabrasion) is a simple, effective solution with a wide range of benefits.

Micro derm abrasion is a procedure that mimics the body’s own process of removing the outer layer of skin, allowing it to be replaced with a new, younger looking layer. The process is called exfoliation. Essentially it is an acceleration of the process, removing the outer layer of skin before the emerging layer can take the shape of its imperfections. If left long enough, the emerging layer will mimic what is on the surface, so by removing the outer layer sooner, the result is a “clean” layer of new skin.

During the procedure, a mildly abrasive agent is applied to the skin. In most cases, it will be aluminum oxide crystals, or in some cases, the wand will have a coarse diamond head. The outer layer of skin is physically broken down, and the debris removed. In the process clogged pores are opened, and circulation inside the skin is stimulated. Lastly, it stimulates collagen re-growth, resulting in a younger, healthier looking skin.

The process is commonly used to treat wrinkles, blemishes, and even acne scars. While repeated treatments may be needed to achieve the desired outcome, the improvements compound in time, restoring the face to its desired state. It is not a once off treatment like conventional dermabrasion, which addresses all scarring in one single treatment, but it is rather a bit-by-bit treatment.

Additionally, in sharp contrast to dermabrasion, micro derm abrasion requires very little in the line of care and recovery time. Dermabrasion requires a few weeks of recovery time, with your skin remaining sensitive to sunlight for months afterwards. Depending on the extent of the treatment, it will require local or full anesthetic. Micro derm abrasion can be done in a lunch hour, and you can head back to work directly afterwards. And even the combined costs of the sessions needed to restore your skin will (in most cases) be a lot less than one dermabrasion treatment.
