Buying a Home Microdermabrasion System: How do You Choose?

Thanks to technological advance, you can (unlike before) use a home microdermabrasion system to address acne scars, wrinkles and blemishes. There is a growing trend among consumers to “take care of themselves” in this regard, but with the huge selection of products popping up it is becoming confusing. If you choose the wrong product, you may not get the required results, and even cause damage to your skin.

Using a home microdermabrasion system is gaining in popularity among those who are moving towards applying professional treatments at home, saving a lot of money while still having access to professional facilities. Unfortunately, among all the products on the shelf, there are many that do not deliver on expectations, with varying degrees of effectiveness. Although all of them claim to be “professional products”, not all home microdermabrasion products were created equal.

Microdermabrasion, when performed by a professional, employs aluminum oxide crystals blown onto the skin, causing the friction to remove the “dead” and damaged layer of skin, accelerating the natural process of exfoliation. This enhances cell turnover, stimulating the re-growth process. The machine used comes with a fairly high price tag, but it is effective, addressing skin tone, scarring and blemishes.

The average home microdermabrasion system does not really classify as a true microdermabrasion system. Some of these systems employ the use of creams, which, although containing aluminum oxide crystals, defeat the object. Since cream lubricates by nature, it reduces friction, which is the very basis of microdermabrasion. By reducing the friction, the effectiveness of the product is sacrificed.

When applying a microdermabrasion cream, which is supposed to “work miracles” by itself, it is applied, kept on for a short while, and then rinsed off, followed by a moisturizer cream. In time, there will be some superficial improvements, but it still lacks the effectiveness of professional microdermabrasion treatment.

When shopping for a home microdermabrasion system, avoid the ones utilizing cream, and look for a system that applies the aluminum oxide crystals directly to the skin surface. This is a true emulation of the more professional systems, and will be much more effective – a much more worthwhile investment.

Doing Home Microderm Abrasion

Originally, derm abrasion, or dermabrasion, was a purely medical treatment. Later on the process was “toned down”, cutting down on the need for anesthetic, recovery time, and as such, the need for a doctor applying the treatment. Microderm abrasion emerged as a new option, and it was only logical that it would eventually be available to private individuals: Home microderm abrasion has come of age.
